WINDOWS 8.1 AND WHY YOU NEED TO UPDATE REGULARLY

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 20 Oktober 2013 0 komentar
It is a thing of marvel to me sometimes when i pick a friend’s laptop and I see a lot of applications crying out to be updated. It’s like having some windows open inviting some intuitive hackers to invade your privacy whenever they feel like. But for crying out loud an operating system should not be left without being updated for a long time, whether Mac, Linux or Windows. Application updates are meant to give you the latest security patches and bug fixes thereby making your online or offline experiences as secured as possible.

This write-up here will be concerned with Windows update. According to Microsoft, Windows 8 was built to bring a modern computing experience to businesses and to help professionals stay connected to their colleagues and clients from anywhere anytime. The update to Windows 8.1 advances this vision and introduces new manageability, mobility, security, user experience and networking capabilities that will be available later this year – with the goal of offering customers the best business tablets and versatile modern business PCs driven by the most powerful operating system designed for today’s modern businesses. Personally on my part upgrading to Windows 8 took me quite a while but when I did I was happy I did. The reason is not far-fetched; with my daily usage of a smartphone, having the experience translated to my pc was a delight as it made some operations quite fluid.

Notable features to watch out in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 will come with some nice features both for corporate and personal use. Only some features will highlighted here and mostly those that will be on personal use.

Tethering
At last windows brings tethering to the PC without the need for third party applications. You can now turn your PC to a hotspot after updating to Windows 8.1 and have other devices tap into your internet connection if you so wish.

Improved bio-metrics
Like it or not bio-metrics as a security feature has come and to stay. Though this feature is not new and has been on previous versions of windows some thoughtful improvements have been made here. Windows 8.1 will also be optimized for fingerprint based bio-metrics and will include a common fingerprint enrollment experience that will work with a variety of readers (touch, swipe). Modern readers are touch based rather than swipe and include liveliness detection that prevents spoofing (e.g.: silicon emulated fingerprints). Access to Windows Store Apps, functions within them, and certificate release can be gated based on verification of a user’s bio-metric identity.

Improved internet explorer
Microsoft says the improvements in Internet Explorer 11 will make it load faster, with a side-by-side browsing of sides (what I call multitask browsing).

Desktop and start screen

For those who prefer the mouse and keyboard experience, you've have not been left out as improvements have been made to accommodate you.

Windows 8.1: The Start Button is back

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 17 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

The Start Button is Back!!!

One of the major features of the recently released Windows 8.1 is our beloved 'Start' button which has been the hallmark of navigation in all Windows based systems right from Windows 95. I bought a laptop for my dad some months ago, running on the Windows 8.0 and I literally needed a GPS to navigate through the laptop. I'm not an just average PC user, I work on different OSes on a daily basis but the new Windows was not it for me till I did some tweaking to get a third party Start button.

The notable changes are as follows

  • The Start Button to classic desktop :):)
  • Old apps, like Photos and Music, have been enhanced with new designs and features.
  • improved help and tooltips functionality
  • A more comprehensive seach
  • Multiple application view
  • improved help and tool tips functionality
However, the old problems such as limited Win 8 apps, navigation on non-touch PCs still exist. It might not seem like much of a change to a non-Windows 8 user at first glance, but this update is a welcome development.

Verdict: The Windows 8 was designed to work across smartphones, tablets and PCs hence, its more of a touch based OS. For the best user experience, a touchscreen laptop is recommended ( but they dont come cheap)

SAFE MODE FOR WINDOWS 7, 8 AND MAC

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 13 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

You are interesting in tweaking an app in your system; you know how to do it and you plunge right to it. Somewhere in the operation you are required to put your system in safe mode…maybe you've never heard of it (are you geek or not?). It becomes a head scratching and ceiling starring session, you are stuck. Scratch and stare no more. Here is how to.
  • WINDOWS 7- Keep pressing F8 while system reboots
  • WINDOWS 8- Type msconfig in search and select safe mode, apply, ok and restart. To exit from safe mode type msconfig in search mode and unselect safe mode, apply and restart

·
For Mac os, it is called safe Boot and here is how to get there.
  • Press and hold the Shift key immediately after the mac starts up. Continue holding the Shift key until a grey Apple logo appears on the screen.

For those who are not so tech inclined but own a pc, it pays to know some basic technicalities involved in your devices. Safe mode whether on Windows or Mac operating system starts the system with a limited number of files and drivers. Start-up program does not come up in safe mode and only the basic drivers needed to start windows are installed. Safe mode is used for troubleshooting with programs and drivers that might not start correctly, or that might prevent windows from starting correctly.

Analysis: Why BBM is going on Android and IOS

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 16 Mei 2013 0 komentar

It might come to many as a surprise why RIM to roll out BBM on Android and iOS a few days ago. It was actually a smart business decision.

RIM has previously restricted the BBM app to only Blackberry devices as a means of making the Blackberry phones more attractive to the prospective consumers, but this is not working as RIM has lost a lot of the market share to Android, iOS and even Windows. BBM is the most valuable product that RIM have as we speak, and it'll be bad for such a good app to go extinct due the struggling Blackberry sales figures.

Competition from other messaging apps (such as Whatsapp) might also be a major reason behind this move. From humble beginning in 2009, Whatsapp was handling ten billion messages per day as of August 2012, growing from two billion in April 2012 and one billion in October 2011. This tremendous growth experienced by Whatsapp was due to the fact that it was cross-platform i.e it works on all major platforms (Android, BB OS, iOS, Symbian S40, S60, Windows). Whatsapp is also seen as a cheaper alternative to text as was observed on the last day of 2012 when they processed 18 billion messages.
Party crashers, Google and Facebook are also working on messaging app due for release anytime soon, so this is the best time for RIM to make the move.

Another reason is the launch of BBM Channel. It's a new platform from RIM to will allow users subscribe to various channels and get updates from the subscribed channel...sounds like another name for twitter if you ask me. However,  cross platform operation is key in order to achieve success and revenue from this new service.

It seems RIM have got it all figured out, what better way to take on your competitor than on a level playing field. I expect the number of active BBM users and messages to increase, which might mark a turnarounf in the fortunes of RIM, however, I am skeptical about the success of the BBM channel. Interesting days ahead

BBM Quick Facts:

  • More than 60 million monthly active users
  • More than 51 million daily active users who are connecting with friends or colleagues an average of one and a half hours every day.
  • BBM users send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps
  • Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received; indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are
